The most a single applicant can be awarded. Never the amount the programme holds.

amount_max is the award ceiling: the largest amount one applicant can receive. It is captioned Award ceiling (per project) on a record.

It is the single most misread number in grant data, because it sits beside amount_total_pool, which is frequently ten to thirty times larger and is not an amount anyone receives. The two are separate columns, under separate labels, and are never added, averaged or shown under one heading.

A ceiling is a limit rather than an expectation. Programmes routinely award well below it.

Where a notice attaches a per-unit cap — "cap $750 per cow" — that wording is stored in amount_note beside the figure rather than folded into it.
