type
What kind of grantmaker this is, taken from the filing rather than from the name.
type classifies the funder: federal, state, local, foundation, corporate,
utility, tribal or other.
It comes from what the organisation is rather than what it is called. Plenty of bodies named "Foundation" are public charities, and plenty of grantmaking programmes sit inside agencies whose names say nothing about grants.
The distinction matters because it decides which filing is the source for the financial figures — a 990 and a 990-PF publish different things — and that is recorded in data_source.
